From the desk of MSA President, Christian Talbot

Last Wednesday for MSA’s The Journey 2025: Project Phoenix was a huge success! School leaders from across the globe joined our summit on leading change in schools through storytelling, collaboration, and new tools.

The #1 insight involved what NeuroLeadership Institute founder David Rock calls the SCARF threats. Evolutionary psychology shows that when people are confronted with organizational change, they tend to experience one or more threats: Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness. That’s a problem for every school leader, whose job is to lead change!

To navigate those emotional and social dangers, The Journey taught participants a 3-step change implementation process called a “Phoenix Project.”

One school leader said that the most valuable aspect of The Journey 2025 was “the gift of time to spend on launching a new Phoenix. The process was super helpful and insightful and I am walking away with a great game plan. I can’t wait to bring this back to my team!”

If you could not attend, do not worry—with an average “likelihood to recommend” of 9.9/10, we plan to convert this into a virtual experience for our full membership. Stay tuned!
