The Middle States Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Caryn Pass, a partner with the law firm Venable LLP and chair of the firm’s education practice, as a Commissioner.

Based in Washington, D.C., Pass leads a nationwide practice advising independent schools in virtually every type of legal matter.

“Middle States partners with thousands of independent schools across the country,” said MSA President Christian Talbot. “Caryn has devoted her career to helping independent schools advance their missions and pursue transformational growth among staff and students, and Middle States will benefit from her extensive experience in the field.”

In her role, Pass advises schools on a wide range of issues including student safety and welfare, employment contracts and handbooks, and developing governance policies. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and attended the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

“I have seen firsthand how schools can benefit from working with Middle States as they navigate the ever-evolving education landscape,” Pass said. “I am excited to join this organization and to continue to support schools and school leaders on their change journey.”

Commissioners meet twice annually to review accreditation recommendations and the organization’s finances, policies and strategic plan.
