Six International Schools Earn Top Recognition from Middle States Association

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS) announced today that six international schools have earned accreditation or reaccreditation, the gold standard for measuring and advancing school improvement.

“Middle States accreditation helps schools all over the world critically review their performance, set a course for positive change and generate the commitment and support necessary for significant and long-term improvement,” said Henry G. Cram, Ed.D., president of the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. “Whether a school looks to build on its record of high performance and solid reputation or is interested in setting a new course for continuous school improvement, Middle States accreditation is a catalyst for making every school better.”

Accreditation is a multifaceted process that schools and school systems voluntarily use to demonstrate they are meeting a defined set of research-based performance standards. The 12 Standards for Accreditation are: mission; governance and leadership; school improvement planning; finances; facilities; school organization and staff; health and safety; information resources; educational program; assessment and evidence of student learning; student services, and student life and activities.

The accreditation process begins with a self-study that is conducted by the school and school system and requires input from school leaders, teachers, parents and students. Following the self-study, a team of volunteer educators from Association member schools conducts an on-site peer review visit to observe school operations and interview various stakeholders.

The visiting team makes its recommendation to the Middle States Association Commissions, which voted to accredit or reaccredit 100 schools and school systems in 11 states and Puerto Rico and seven countries at its biannual meeting earlier this month.

The international schools that earned accreditation or reaccreditation are:

• Al Hekma International School in Kingdom of Bahrain
• Ambatovy International School in Madagascar
• The American School of Kinshasa in Congo
• The American School of Tangier in Morocco
• Pinewood American International School in Greece
• Rosslyn Academy in Kenya
