Dear Friends—
As we wind down another school year — my first as the President of the Middle States Association — I can’t help but reflect on how much we’ve learned together.
- Author Michael B. Horn taught us that a mastery-based approach to learning can be a game-changer in the classroom.
- Reach Capital co-founder Jennifer Carolan encouraged us to incorporate artificial intelligence into classroom learning, instead of shutting the door (and our minds) to it.
- Scientist Annie Murphy Paul revealed that a lot of our learning happens outside of the brain, which means there is plenty at stake with how we design school, from how classrooms are arranged to when recess is scheduled.
- Psychotherapist Camille Banks-Lee noted that smartphones and social media are contributing to a mental health crisis among children and teens, while Seton Hall Preparatory School’s James Incardona reminded us that one of the most powerful tools for addressing student mental health starts with us—that is, strong relationships with caring adults.
During this “Year of the Middle States Network” we have unlocked the power of innovative and skilled educators from around the globe to help us — you, me, our colleagues — lead positive change in our schools and the wider education community.
Through virtual events, workshops, blog posts, and other activities, we have connected you with thought-leaders in education and explored new ideas in artificial intelligence, student mental health, school and curriculum design, teacher growth and development, and much more.
At the same time, over 320 schools and school systems earned accreditation or reaccreditation, demonstrating their commitment to meeting the changing needs of students.
And, more than 2 million students at Middle States member schools around the globe grew intellectually, emotionally, and socially this school year thanks to educators like you.
As you head into summer break, I hope that you reflect on all that you learned and accomplished this year, and celebrate your successes.
Together, we are preparing young people to contribute to the common good, to be purposeful citizens, and to live fulfilling lives.
