Middle States welcomes James E. Tucker as one of our newest Commissioners. Superintendent of the Maryland School for the Deaf, with locations in Frederick and Columbia, Md., Tucker is one of eight new commissioners who will begin serving with the organization this month.

Since 1992, Tucker has served as Superintendent of the Maryland School for the Deaf. A graduate of Gallaudet University and New York University, he began his career as a research assistant at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, Calif., and also served as a high school and college English instructor and a college admissions director. He has delivered more than 100 presentations and keynote addresses at educational conferences and meetings worldwide since 1980. He also served as the president of the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf in 2006-2008 and 2014-2016.

Tucker’s leadership in the educational community is an important addition to Middle States. His understanding of students of differing educational experiences adds another important layer to school improvement.

“I am happy that James has agreed to join Middle States as a commissioner,” said Lisa Marie McCauley, Ed.D., president of the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. “James has extensive experience in education management and public administration and understands firsthand the challenges schools face in offering high-quality educational programs to students at a wide variety of levels and abilities.”

“Middle States accreditation helps school leaders, teachers and parents work together to set and achieve goals aimed at providing high quality education for all students. I am excited to serve as a commissioner and to support the important work Middle States is doing with schools and school leaders locally and globally.”
